Have you seen those flexible gymnasts do crazy moves that you wonder, “How can they to do that?! I want to do that!”
Maybe it’s the splits you’re trying to achieve, but just don’t know how to get to the point where you can do the splits. Maybe you just want to touch your toes. The process is the same for both.
The easy answer is, stretch every day! Don’t overstretch. You can cause more pain to yourself than if you’re carefully stretching.
Naturally if you don’t stretch much you will feel a tightness and pain, but if you can relax and breathe through the pain, and gently stretch every day, you will find you are getting more and more flexible by the day!
The best time to stretch is in the morning after you’ve gotten a warm shower or bath–your muscles are then warm and more relaxed than uptight and cold when you first wake up. If you can stretch when they are warm, it’s going to alleviate some of the pain, and you will be more comfortable and more willing to do more stretching than if they are cold and tight.
The point of stretching is to feel pain, but not to the point that it’s excruciating and you end up giving up. That’s not the point at all. You want to feel the pain every so slightly. Be sure you relax, and breathe. Breathing is very important, it helps your muscles relax and know it is okay to give in to the stretch.
